Learn how to live, work, and be part of the worldwide workforce while building your professional skills in the Spanish language. All of our internship programs in Costa Rica are offered in conjunction with our sister organization Maximo Nivel.

Internship Opportunities in Costa Rica

COSI offers internships in Costa Rica for both individuals and university groups. Through our sister organization Maximo Nivel, COSI has agreements with both public and private institutions that allow international students to gain practical work experience and build their Spanish language proficiency.
The international internship program includes 4 to 6 hours of daily practical work, 1 hour per day of private Spanish classes, and a final project/report to be presented in front of a review panel. All internship participants are supported with a reference letter at the end of the program, official supervisor evaluations, and assistance with any paperwork required by your university.

COSI and Maximo Nivel offer all international internship participants:

Internships are offered in 4-week placements and 8-week placements, or longer.

Internship Program Options

intern-teachingWork as an international education intern in Costa Rica and gain experience alongside professional teachers in an international setting.

Education placements are usually in English-speaking classrooms at private schools. Education interns can choose from early childhood, elementary, middle school, and high school placements. As an education intern, you observe professional teachers, as well as plan and teach your own lessons. During your internship, you are observed and receive feedback to help improve your skills as a teacher. You also expand your understanding of curricula and standards; family and community considerations; and methods for measuring students’ development.

Program Commitment: 4 week minimum

Requirements: At least 18 years of age | Currently enrolled in Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Education, Secondary Education, or related discipline | Required final project | Able to be creative with limited resources | Hard working and ready for anything | Spanish language skills are not required

intern-special-educationWork as an international special education intern in Costa Rica and gain experience alongside professional teachers in an international setting.

Special education placements are usually at private schools. Special needs include visually impaired students, hearing impaired students, and students who are developmentally challenged. Through working as a teacher’s aide, conducting your own lessons, working with individual students, and teacher-to-teacher mentoring, you grow as a teacher. Throughout your internship, you come to understand special needs curricula and standards, and the obstacles faced by schools and families.

intern-in-tourismCosta Rica is a top international destination and it is the perfect place to do an international internship in hospitality and tourism!

Internship placements are usually with small tourism businesses such as tour operators, boutique hotels, and hostels. Internship work is generally focused on website improvement, social media management, marketing, and improving and updating sales materials. Other work may include client database development, sales training, and more.

Location: San Jose and Manuel Antonio

human-rights-internshipsWork as an international intern in Costa Rica specializing in human rights and get experience on the front lines of poverty, discrimination, resource allocation, and other social justice issues.

Human rights placements are usually with small community organizations, NGOs, and government agencies. Interns work with change agents and other social workers who are focused on empowerment and social justice. Interns may help with community outreach, education, research, and fund-raising. Immerse yourself into a community and a project and see first-hand the impacts of culture, social values, and the roles of politics, religion, gender, and ethnicity.

micro-business-internLearn from local entrepreneurs and business owners in Costa Rica as an international intern in Micro Business.

Micro business placements are usually in small local companies. Internship work generally focuses on Sales and Marketing, Client Service, or Accounting. As an international intern, you work with in-country entrepreneurs to help them improve their organizations and expand their marketing to international customers. Micro Business interns learn about business practices in the developing world—you gain real-world business experience, increase your knowledge of business Spanish, and establish your professional base as a globally-minded business person.

medical-internshipWork as an international medical intern in Costa Rica and gain exposure to medical practices and systems in the developing world.

Medical placements are usually at hospitals, clinics, assisted living facilities, and private practices. Medical interns are partnered with local medical professionals and provide daily assistance with their work. Through your internship, you gain valuable skills in diagnosis, intervention, and evaluation. Work may include triage, patient consultations, check-ups, making rounds, elderly care, health education, materials management, and patient records. During your internship, you also increase your medical terminology in Spanish and improve your ability to communicate with Spanish-speaking patients. As an international medical intern, you build the professional base you need to become a globally-minded medical practitioner.

As part of your international internship program, you have a qualified Internship Advisor from Maximo Nivel. Your advisor starts the program with an introductory meeting to help get you started, followed by a meeting in the middle of your program, and again at the end of your program to review university requirements (if any) and your final project.
